Planting and Plant Species on Mt Pirongia
Planting
In addition to pest control, the society also supports farmers and the Department of Conservation native planting projects to encourage environmental sustainability, provide natural habit for native wild life species and minimize agricultural impacts on our precious waterways.
While the work we do at Pirongia Forest Park does not entail restoration planting, there are a number of local projects that seek assistance with re-establishing native plantings. As part of our overall environmental support mission, project like this are promoted to our members and volunteers. These opportunities generally involve one or two days where plantings are organized with the plants provided, and anyone interested comes along with a spade and boots etc to help get plants in the ground. Sometimes there is follow-up required with releasing the plants from weeds and this only usually takes one day.
In exchange for labor, in and around the Waipa/Waikato district, farmers and DOC make donations to the society to support pest control operations on the maunga. Again it is the hard work and commitment of our amazing volunteers that make this work possible, leaving a legacy for all future generations of New Zealanders to enjoy.
